U.N.A.Y.O. Past, Present and Future

The United North Amityville Youth Organization, Inc. (U.N.A.Y.O.) began as the brainchild of 29 community minded men.  During the 1980’s, much like many other hamlets in America, North Amityville found itself blighted with the infestation of drugs in its community.  Many offered a band-aid solution to a tourniquet problem.  The  men, all fathers, community residents with a variety of employment and community organizational backgrounds, sought to offer the youth of North Amityville a program that would offer recreational, educational and cultural programs.  They wanted to merge the only two successful youth programs in the community.
The North Amityville Teams Against Drugs (TAD) organized a coed softball team under the auspices of Suffolk County Police Athletic League (PAL).  Ten adult volunteers including Willie Tutt, Paul Green, Curtiss Courts, Ken Alves, Hosea Green, Valerie Tutt and Shirley Sims managed the 72 Player team for youths ages 8 to 18.
Concurrently, many of these same adult volunteers were involved in the North Amityville Black History—Youth Awareness Class administered by Valerie Tutt and Diane Mimms.  The primary goal of this group was to promote educational and cultural programs to its members.

In accordance with community demand for more of these successful programs, the North Amityville African American History/Youth Awareness Council and the North Amityville Teams Against Drugs successfully merged and formed the United North Amityville Youth Organization, Inc. in April of 1989.
From its inception, U.N.A.Y.O. has offered broad programmatic services, which ultimately prepare today’s youth to be viable productive adult community residents.  To date, there are still three of the original founding fathers deeply involved in U.N.A.Y.O.  Willie H. Tutt, Past President, Curtis L. Courts, Treasurer and Paul Green, Sgt. at Arms.  With an average roster of three hundred and fifty youngsters and a wide range of programs, U.N.A.Y.O. continues to expand.

In 1997, the Town of Babylon built the North Amityville Youth Center of which U.N.A.Y.O. has use of 95% of the facility.  Critical to U.N.A.Y.O.’s growth is the ability to network with the school districts, local, county, state, and the federal community and government organizations, as well as the community at large. In the next five years U.N.A.Y.O. will increase it’s parent and youth population by 20% and add a computer technology construction component, a youth readiness class and academic classes for high school students.

In order to continue the positive growth, U.N.A.Y.O. stands and lives by its motto, “To Build a Foundation, Support A Child
